ABOUT SANDPLAY SUPERVISION AND CONSULTATION

The Northern California region is fortunate to have many Certified Sandplay Therapist Teachers. All CST-Ts provide sandplay process, supervision and consultation. The hours gained are approved toward certification by Sandplay Therapists of American and the International Society of Sandplay Therapists. Both in person and on-line supervision hours are allowed, so this list is also useful to people who are not located close enough to attend in person. Details on earning hours toward certification in sandplay can be found in the STA Handbook online at www.sandplay.org  Please note that the supervisor/consultant cannot also be your therapist for a sandplay therapy process.

Some groups provide consultation for those who are already certified or experienced with sandplay. Others are designed for supervision and focus on teaching through cases. Guided by the supervisor/consultant, members of a sandplay group usually take turns sharing cases and discuss theory and practice of sandplay. Seeing a variety of sandplay cases enriches understanding the diversity and scope of sandplay therapy.

Use this list to locate and contact a CST-T for individual or group supervision/consultation. It is divided into directions with San Francisco as the center reference. More information about each CST-T can be found under their name in the directory.

The Northern California Regional Sandplay Society is a hub for the community of therapists learning, teaching and practicing sandplay in California. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization and offer post-graduate level training in sandplay therapy that meets the criteria to become a Sandplay Practitioner or Certified Sandplay Therapist through Sandplay Therapists of America and the International Society of Sandplay Therapists. We host events promoting sandplay, mentor therapists to become certified, and provide Continuing Education credits as an approved CE Provider through California Psychological Association.

Sandplay Therapy is a nonverbal therapeutic process that facilitates expression and integration of the deep contents of the psyche. A person’s inner world is revealed symbolically while creating an image in the sand, within a container, using objects and miniature figures. Sandplay therapists support clients’ natural tendency toward healing and growth. This occurs within what Sandplay founder Dora Kalff called “the free and protected space” of the therapeutic relationship, protected from interruption or judgment and open to free, expressive play.

Sandplay is rooted in Jungian theory, Lowenfeld’s World Technique of play therapy, and elements of Asian philosophy. Sandplay therapy is offered to all ages, in a wide range of settings from private practice to schools, clinics, and hospitals worldwide by trained therapists treating people across cultures for mental health and behavioral conditions.
