Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and the volcano was exiled from her homeland in Tahiti and took an epic journey of transformation across the Pacific Ocean.  Eventually, she made her new home in Hawai`i at the crater of Kilauea, the most active volcano on earth.  As we face powerful eruptions in our lives, Pele helps us embrace the energies of inner and outer volcanic activity.  This workshop explores the living mythology of Pele, from the Kilauea eruption in 2018 on Hawai’i Island to the present-day global pandemic.

Join us as we interact with the Pele myth on a personal level through storytelling and image making; learn about the use of mobile sandplay in disaster relief; and explore how Pele appears in the sandplay images of children and adults during times of community crisis. Together we will also view an award-winning documentary film, Fire and Sand and explore the archetypal patterns of destruction and creation and take pause to resonate with our own inner calling in today’s world.

Learning Objectives:

1.      Describe how myth may provide psychocultural resources for healing.

2.      Identify archetypal patterns in the Pele myth and in today’s world crisis.

3.      Explore the “living mythology” of Pele in the Hawaiian culture and in sandplay therapy.

4.      Identify three ways that sandplay therapy alleviates symptoms of traumatic stress.

5.      Distinguish mobile sandplay in relief work from traditional applications of sandplay therapy.

Who should attend: Play/sandplay therapists, social workers, psychologists, or counselors interested in a post-graduate level workshop and in earning training hours toward credentialing as a sandplay therapist.
